The Ascension
In "The Ascension," you control Adam, an ambitious professional who seems to have arrived at the mysterious Paradiso Corporation for what should be a routine job interview. But the receptionist's odd instructions suggest otherwise. To reach Paradiso's elusive CEO, Immanuel, for your final interview, you must traverse all nine floors of the corporation, each an elaborate puzzle in its own right.
As you climb the tower, two representatives of the company will guide you. They will give you conflicting advice. One is Mephisto. He is the corporate consultant. He is charismatic. He is also, in many ways, the devil. His practical suggestions often skirt ethical boundaries, if not cross them outright. Then there is Grace. She is the HR representative. She is the opposite of Mephisto. She is principled, which allows her to be—and makes her have to be—quite demanding.
What starts off as an odd interview process slowly comes to light as being something much deeper—a journey through the borderline unethical and straight-up sinful decisions that have defined your corporate existence. Each floor morphs into an ever more bizarre environment that reacts to your prior decisions. Your ethics are challenged, for instance, in the increasingly absurd office affairs you are expected to justify; or in the resource allocation decisions that would make a kindergartner cry a river; or in the day-to-day operations of a corporation that, even with all appearances to the contrary, is a good deal less green than its marketing would have you believe.
Will you give in to Mephisto's tempting shortcuts, or follow Grace's hard-earned wisdom? As the building reveals its true nature, you'll come to understand that this isn't merely about getting a job—it's about the salvation of your soul.
